The eyes of Australian futsal fans will be tuned into South Australia’s Adelaide Super Drome for the 2017 Series Futsal Australia tournament this September.
The Series Futsal commission has confirmed that the best futsal clubs from around Australia will converge on the famous SA sporting destination to compete for the ultimate prize in the Australian futsal landscape over a four-day tournament on September 22-25.
The top two clubs from Victoria, Queensland, West Australia and hosts South Australia, plus two wildcard entrants, will play for the mens title (maximum of 10 teams).
For the women, the top two teams from each state-based leagues will fight out for the women’s title (maximum of eight teams).
After operating solely in Victoria since 2006 and building a reputation as an exciting and dynamic form of futsal, Series Futsal has expanded in recent months with Queensland, South Australia and New South Wales now holding their inaugural seasons.
The nationwide Series Futsal Australia tournament has been held each year since 2012, now played twice every calendar year.
The 2017 edition at the Adelaide Super Drome mark’s the ninth men’s tournament and the sixth for women.
West Australia’s Claremont Cambio Cumbre is the reigning men’s champions having won a record-breaking four consecutive crowns, while Adelaide women’s team Gepps Cross FC will attempt to reclaim its crown in its own home state.
Series Futsal chief commissioner Peter Parthimos says that with more states adopting the Series Futsal format, this year’s national title is set to be the most hostly contested.
“This will be the first time that we’ve held Series Futsal Australia over four days and it is going to a massive event,” said Parthimos.
“I’ve been involved in the futsal industry for many years, and I have never seen such a desire from clubs and players to compete at the top level of their sport.
“I’m proud that our brand of futsal has become the game that everyone wants to play.
“The Series Futsal team is really looking forward to heading to South Australia. Raff Frisina and the team at Series Futsal SA has been a long time supporter of our vision and we feel they are going to host a fantastic event for the best clubs in Australia.”
Frisina, the founder of the SA Futsal League and commissioner for SFSA, is looking forward to seeing the best futsal clubs in Australia compete in his own backyard.
“South Australia is a great state known for quality sport, so it will be a privilege for us to host the best futsal clubs and players from around Australia,” Frisinia said.
“With the Series Futsal style of the sport really starting to take off, this is going to be a tournament to remember.
“It’s also great news that our own Gepps Cross women’s team will have the chance to defend its crown on home soil. I really feel that the SA teams are going to lift in front of their fans.”
