Experienced futsal player and manager Fernando de Moraes says that the set piece play that secured Fitzroy a vital goal against Metropolitan FC last Sunday was one of the oldest tricks in the book.

Fitzroy took a side ball during the first half, with Gabriel Lucena eventually scoring a classy goal.

De Moraes, a former Futsalroo captain and assistant manager of the Futsalroo’s recent bid at the Futsal World Cup, says that the play was something that he learned at a young age in his home country of Brazil.

“This is an old one,” he told SeriesFutsal.com.

“I used to do it when I was playing futsal back in Brazil as a 10 year old. Somethings you never forget, especially when it works, and as it turned out, it worked out very well.”

Fitzroy has been known for its set-piece plays in the early part of this season, but de Moraes says that creating plays like this is not a major focus during Fitzroy training.

“We could go crazy on it, but I prefer to have a hand full of good ones in our bag and execute them properly rather than have 15 and be unorganised.

“We do practice set pieces every session. I try to incorporate throughout the whole session so the players can understand and execute on every opportunity.

“For this one, we didn’t train a lot for it because we didn’t even score once from it at training. (But) I just saw the opportunity and fortunately our players understood the message and executed with perfection. Credit to them for the goal.”

De Moraes says that planned set pieces play a vital role in the games, making the spectacle more entertaining for the crowd.

“You have to keep trying different ideas,” he said.

“As a manager and players, you need to innovate and make the crowd froth with excitement.”

Fitzroy takes on CF Brunswick in a vital Round 7 clash at 4:05pm this Sunday.
