Greenvale FC 0-18 Brunswick Warriors FC

The opening game of the night saw bottom of the table Greenvale take on a title chaser in Brunswick Warriors. In what was expected to be a lopsided result it was Brunswick who blew their opponents away in the opening half, scoring thirteen unanswered goals, with both Pam Demetriou & Monica Fonua netting hat tricks, while Penny Bakopoulos, Cristina Fonua and newcomer Emma Langley all bagged braces to have this in danger of a big result.

The second half saw the scoring dry up a little for the Warriors with a second half hat trick to Cristina Fonua seeing her side finish the game with five, as well as Alki Stefanidis getting her second of the game to running out convincing winners.

Northcote City FC 2-4 Pascoe Vale FC

Next up saw two top four sides from last season go head to head as Northcote City took on Pascoe Vale. In what is always a close encounter, it was Northcote who started the brighter as Mary Hubeek’s long range effort found its way in for the opener, before they doubled their advantage on the back of a sweeping counter attack that saw Claudia Dimasi net for a two goal advantage. Before the break some nice play from Pascoe Vale saw Abbey Flight tap home to halve the deficit before the break.

Early in the second half Pascoe would pull themselves level as Flight won the ball off Iesha Atik and finished it off to level the game at two. Soon after they had the lead as a stunning strike from Jess Byrne had her side ahead. Northcote were looking to fight their way back into the game but another stunner Jan Mustac would cap on a fantastic come from behind win for Pascoe.

FC Carlton Heart 1-0 Fitzroy FC

Next up saw Carlton Heart face the league leaders Fitzroy as they were looking to keep pace with the league leaders. A tight first half saw Fitzroy have the bulk of the possession, as Carlton held tight defensively to keep the game at 0-0 for a long period, before Rebecca Davies found herself with some space on the right flank and she fired it home to give her side the lead, which they carried into the half time break.

Fitzroy upped the attacking pressure in the second half but Carlton were holding firm and hitting on the break as they came close to getting an all important two goal cushion on a number of occasions. With 25 seconds left on the clock Fitzroy were awarded a penalty, after Em Coppock was fouled in the area, and Coppock would step up to send the game to a penalty shootout, However Coppock was denied by the the brilliant Paige Daly who capped her stellar performance with a clean sheet, as Carlton hand Fitzroy their first defeat of the season and remain in touch with their opponents.

Melbourne Amazons FC 1-3 FC Preston

The final game of the night saw Melbourne Amazons who were chasing their first win of the season, take on an in form Preston side. It was the Amazons who struck first through an in form player of their own in Zoe Schaffner to take the lead. On the stroke of half time, Preston pulled level through Nat Italiano to ensure they went into the break on level terms.

The second half remained a stalemate for a large portion of the half, until with six minutes to play Elizabeth Eyar finished her one on one chance to give Preston the lead as they then looked to hold on for victory. With three minutes to play, Preston would ice the game after a super piece of play saw Janelle Sammut find Steph Galea who all but secured the three points for Preston. It was another harsh defeat for the Amazons who are still pushing for a big scalp.
