Pascoe Vale won the battle of the undefeated teams against Hume last week to stay on top of the table. Ashburton lost to bottom team Metro in their last game and face the tough task of getting back to winning ways against a team that is yet to let any team beat them this season.
Ashburton shocked the champions by taking a deserved early lead. The underdogs Ashburton were not playing like it, continuing to play on the front foot and doubling its lead. Pascoe Vale appeared stunned by Ashburton’s positive play and the champions were unable to find a response of their own, being completely outplayed and not troubling the scorers in the first period of play.
The second half started off with a similar tune, with Ashburton continuing to dominate the play, much to the surprise of the jam-packed grandstand. In a reactive substitution, Pascoe Vale’s manager brought on first-choice goalkeeper Felipe Bley, who was initially being rested for this game. Bley and the rest of the Pascoe Vale team were unable to bring a halt to the Ashburton train though, as it scored its third goal of the game. Despite flickering signs of a comeback from the champions, Ashburton just continued to put the ball in the back of the net. Fans and players alike were pinching themselves in disbelief as the final scoreline read Ashburton 8, Pascoe Vale 2.
