Recap
Both teams are coming off disappointing losses as Balwyn fell just short against Brunswick and Fitzroy failed to overcome Pascoe Vale. Both managers would have their players well aware of the importance of a win in what looks to be a titanic clash.
The first half was a slog fest that saw neither team capable of breaking through with the defenses and goalkeepers working hard. The attacks of both teams where coming to nothing as the teams continued to fail at the critical moment. Finally after over ten minutes of play Balwyn landed the first blow as Marco Cardinali managed to firer a shot into the back of the net following some great ball movement from Balwyn. The goal was the last highlight of the half as both teams where trying to feel each other out.
The play from the first half was carried into the second as again both teams struggled on offence and the defenses where solid. Fitzroy looked the more dangerous team as they continued to make attacks that where falling just short. Finally a banging shot from Jackson Shaw belted off the cross bar and made its way into the net. Fitzroy looked set to take over the game as they quickly followed their first goal with a second to open up a one goal lead. Balwyn didn’t let this dishearten them as they responded quickly to again equalize the score. This was all the game had left to offer as both teams again found themselves in a stalemate. The game ended as a two all draw.
The penalty shootout was short and sweet as both teams failed to convert their first two penalties and as Balwyn lined up for their third a hush fell over the crowd. The penalty was sent over the bar opening an opportunity for Fitzroy to finish the game. Alistar Dunlop stepped up and converted comfortably. Following the shootout Fitzroy managed to get a huge win that puts them in touch with the top sides again.
