Recap
Fitzroy left it late against Metro on Friday night, it would have been looking for a more relaxed encounter against an improving Collingwood. Collingwood lost to defending champions Pascoe Vale on Friday, it would have seen this as a slightly more winnable game.
Collingwood started off strong, surprising Fitzroy with an early surge and opening the scoring in the first five minutes. Fitzroy hit back not long after, leveling the scores. Fitzroy broke through to take the lead late it in the half, much to the satisfaction of pleading manager Fernando De Moreas who was begging his players to lift their game.
Collingwood pressed Fitzroy high in the second half in an attempt to find an equaliser, and its efforts were rewarded with a ten meter penalty awarded for Fitzroy’s sixth foul of the half. Fitzroy’s goalkeeper Michael Chami saved the resulting spot kick, but when a time-0ut was called, De Moraes made it clear to his players that he was none too pleased with them committing six fouls in one half and putting themselves in a situation to concede an avoidable goal. Despite this, after the time-out, Fitzroy conceded its seventh foul and Collingwood was awarded yet another spot kick. Man of the match Chami did not mind too much though, once again coming to Fitzroy’s rescue with a fantastic save. The match ended 2-1 in Fitzroy’s favor, but it’s safe to say its manager won’t be all smiles in the dressing room.
Man of the match: Michael Chami (Fitzroy FC)
