Recap

Following their five goal win Ashburton came into the second leg game against Mickleham with confidence. Mickleham had a mountain to climb but where determined to make their way into the Series Futsal league.

Much like Wednesday’s clash the game was heated from the opening minutes with Mickleham coming out ready to take it up to their opposition with lots of physical tackling. Ashburton responded well to the physicality of their opposition. Scoring two goals early to stretch their five goal lead out to seven and make the score difference almost insurmountable. The goals came through some quick attacking play and the usual Ashburton flare that has become expected from the skilful group. Mickleham was falling further behind and becoming rapidly more frustrated by the oppositions ball movement. Following the early Ashburton dominance Mickleham found a spark and began to take the game on themselves. Finding a way to score some solid team goals and go into half time with some confidence and a goal closer to their opponents than they had been at the start of the game.

The second half started again in Ashburton’s favour with some great skill and a quick goal coming from gun player Shams Haidari who ripped past two defenders before finishing into the bottom corner. It proved to be the boost that Ashburton needed to get back on top of their opposition. With another quick goal soon following. The promotion looked to be quickly slipping out of Mickleham’s grasp. Again they needed a lift and some physical tackling that caught some of the Ashburton players off guard was enough to get Mickleham some presence in the game. They took advantage of this and found a way to score four late goals to again peg the deficit back. Mickleham’s only enemy was the clock as they dominated general play with shot after shot. Some great goalkeeping and poor finishing in equal measure was too much for Mickleham to get past as they couldn’t do enough to get past AShburton. The game ended with a seven goals to six score line in favour of Mickleham but the win wasn’t enough to overcome the five goal deficit of the previous leg of the play offs; the final score read 14-10 in Asburtons favour.

Congratulations to Ashburton who will be welcomed back to Series futsal next season.
