Fitzroy needed to win after both Brunswick and Balwyn picked up all three points earlier in the day. For Hume, the stakes could hardly be bigger. Win, and go joint top with rivals Pascoe Vale. Its destiny was in its own hands.

Fitzroy made it clear that it was there to spoil the Hume party in the first half. An early goal followed by another later in the half gave Fitzroy a two goal advantage. Hume could not get past Fitzroy’s in-form keeper Michael Chami and went into the half-time break two goals behind.

The second half was more prosperous for the title challengers. They got one back to put pressure on Fitzroy; and the pressure tolled when a long throw from Hume’s keeper Rahmaan Balla towards Ubeyde Cicek was headed into the back of the net to level the scores. Fitzroy gained back momentum shortly after, scoring two goals in succession with less than eight minutes on the clock. Hume scored another to get within a goal again but Fitzroy quickly added a fifth to numb Hume’s spirits. A goal on the buzzer from Hume’s captain Nejdett Sahin served as nothing more than a consolation as Hume missed out on its latest opportunity to top the Series Futsal table.
